DIET Leh Hosts Christopher Jolly to Boost Foundational Literacy in Ladakh

Leh, Ladakh (India): The District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Leh, organised a special interaction programme with Christopher John Howard Jolly, OBE, Chairman of Jolly Learning Ltd and the pioneer of the globally recognised Jolly Phonics programme, to strengthen foundational literacy and English language education in Ladakh.

The programme was also attended by Shainaz Jussa, Delivery Partner for the Ladakh Jolly Phonics Project, and Joe, a representative of Jolly Learning Ltd. The guests were accorded a traditional welcome by the DIET fraternity and felicitated with khataks, reflecting Ladakh’s rich cultural heritage and hospitality.

The event was attended by Principal DIET Leh S.D. Namgail, heads of departments, faculty members and educators from across the district.

The interaction highlighted the significance of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh, and Jolly Learning Ltd, which aims to strengthen foundational literacy, enhance teachers’ capacities and improve English language learning among children through the implementation of the Jolly Phonics programme.

Addressing the gathering, Christopher Jolly spoke about the transformative power of literacy and underscored the vital role of teachers in shaping young minds. He appreciated the commitment and enthusiasm of Ladakh’s teaching community and reaffirmed his support for literacy initiatives in the region.

The programme also acknowledged the contributions of Shainaz Jussa and Joe for their continued support, coordination and commitment in implementing the Jolly Phonics initiative and strengthening the educational partnership in Ladakh.

DIET Leh expressed its gratitude to the Jolly Learning Foundation for providing high-quality teaching and learning materials, which have enhanced classroom practices and enriched students’ learning experiences across the region.

Speaking on the occasion, Principal S.D. Namgail thanked Christopher Jolly for his visionary leadership and valuable contribution towards improving the education sector in Ladakh. He also appreciated the efforts of Shainaz Jussa and Joe in advancing foundational literacy and empowering teachers throughout the region.

The programme concluded with a renewed commitment to ensuring quality education and universal literacy for every child in Ladakh. Officials said the visit of Christopher Jolly, Shainaz Jussa and Joe marked another important step in the region’s ongoing efforts to strengthen foundational learning and achieve educational excellence.
