Leh :- The work on the comprehensive upgrade and beautification of Leh’s historic Old Town is progressing rapidly. This project is considered a significant initiative aimed at preserving the area’s rich cultural heritage, traditional architecture, and historical identity while integrating modern civic amenities. A special focus is being placed on making the Old Town more organized, clean, safe, and tourist-friendly. The project is expected to be completed by the end of September.
Aligned with the vision of Lieutenant Governor Ladakh VK Saxena, this transformation balances modern urban amenities with the area’s historic character. The project involves developing multi-purpose trenching and common utility ducts to relocate water, electricity, and telecommunication lines underground. This will not only organize the scattered wires and utility infrastructure but also enhance the visual appeal of the Old Town.
Additionally, the project includes the development of convenient pedestrian walkways, heritage-sensitive street beautification, improved lighting, public amenities, wayfinding signage, and adequate parking facilities. These measures aim to provide a more convenient and enhanced experience for both local residents and tourists visiting from across the country and abroad.
The objective of this significant initiative goes beyond merely creating modern infrastructure; it seeks to integrate new amenities while safeguarding Leh’s historical and cultural identity. Special emphasis is being placed on the Old Town’s traditional architecture and unique cultural character to ensure that the area’s heritage and historical soul remain intact alongside development.
This initiative is being advanced in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi” (Development as well as Heritage). Upon completion, Leh’s historic Old Town will showcase a harmonious blend of modern civic amenities, improved public spaces, and preserved heritage. This is expected to enhance the beauty of the area while further strengthening Leh’s cultural identity.
