JAMMU: Emphasizing the importance of preventive cardiac care and early detection, Head of the Department of Cardiology, Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, Dr. Sushil Sharma, in collaboration with Sri Sri Rural Development Programme Trust (The Art of Living) and NHPC, organized a day-long Cardiac Awareness-cum-Health Check-up Camp at NITS Polytechnic, Indira Nagar, Miran Sahib, Jammu.
During the camp, participants were sensitized about the growing burden of cardiovascular diseases and the importance of regular health screening. Dr. Sushil emphasized healthy dietary habits, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding tobacco, managing stress and getting adequate sleep.
Interacting with participants, Dr. Sushil highlighted the shift in modern cardiology from treating heart disease after symptoms appear to identifying risks at an early stage and preventing complications. He explained that conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity and family history of heart disease can silently damage the cardiovascular system.
He also highlighted advances in cardiovascular risk assessment, modern imaging and screening techniques, and newer treatments for managing cholesterol and reducing cardiovascular risks. Referring to newer heart-protective medicines, including SGLT2 inhibitors, he stressed that medical advances should always be complemented by a healthy lifestyle and regular medical evaluation.
Dr. Sushil advised people, particularly those with hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cholesterol problems or a family history of heart disease, to undergo periodic health assessments instead of waiting for symptoms to develop. He stressed that early risk assessment, timely screening and appropriate treatment can significantly reduce the chances of serious complications such as heart attack, stroke and heart failure.
Concluding the programme, Dr. Sushil reaffirmed his commitment to conducting cardiac awareness and health-screening camps in different communities to make preventive healthcare more accessible.
The Management Committee of NITS Polytechnic, including Chairman Satvinder Gupta, Principal Anirudh Gupta and former Panch Harjit Singh of Kharian, appreciated Dr. Sushil and his team for organizing the camp and expressed their gratitude for the initiative.
