Flash Floods and Landslides Disrupt Doda–Kishtwar Highway, Vehicles Buried in Kishtwar

Kishtwar/Doda, J&K (India): The Jammu–Kishtwar Highway has been closed by the authorities following a flash flood at Prem Nagar in Doda district, triggered by heavy rainfall.

The highway was shut as a precaution after the flash flood and the resulting landslide rendered the route unsafe for traffic.

In Doda district, incessant rainfall triggered flash floods at several locations, disrupting normal life and damaging property and infrastructure. Officials said there were no immediate reports of any loss of life.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as rescue, restoration and road clearance operations continue in the rain-affected areas.

Meanwhile, in neighbouring Kishtwar district, initial reports said a major landslide struck near the 540 MW Kwar Hydroelectric Power Project, burying several vehicles under a massive mound of debris.

The situation worsened due to heavy rainfall and the subsequent flash flood, which reportedly buried multiple vehicles and caused extensive damage.

Rescue teams, assisted by heavy earthmoving machinery, were immediately deployed to clear the debris, retrieve the buried vehicles and restore access to the affected area. The operation was still underway at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the authorities have also closed Sinthan Pass as a precautionary measure until weather conditions improve and have advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel.
