Jammu, To mark World Hypertension Day, Dr. Sushil Sharma organized a day-long cardiac awareness and health check-up camp at Gurudwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha. The initiative aimed to spread awareness about the growing incidence of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, while educating the public on the importance of preventive healthcare and healthy lifestyle practices.
The camp witnessed enthusiastic participation from local residents, many of whom availed themselves of cardiovascular screening, blood pressure monitoring, and expert medical guidance.
During his interaction with the public, Dr. Sushil Sharma described hypertension as one of the most neglected yet life-threatening medical conditions worldwide. He explained that high blood pressure is often referred to as a “silent killer” because it develops gradually without noticeable symptoms while continuously damaging vital organs such as the heart, brain, kidneys, eyes, and blood vessels.
He stated that many people remain unaware of their condition until serious complications such as stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, or vision loss occur. Stressing the importance of regular health monitoring, he said early diagnosis and timely treatment can significantly reduce the risk of long-term complications and save lives.
Dr. Sharma further highlighted the major factors contributing to the rising burden of hypertension, including excessive salt intake, obesity, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, mental stress, sedentary lifestyle, inadequate sleep, and dependence on processed foods. He also pointed out that rapid urbanization and changing lifestyle patterns have led to an alarming increase in hypertension cases among younger individuals.
Explaining the harmful effects of uncontrolled blood pressure, he said prolonged hypertension places excessive strain on the heart, weakens blood vessels, increases the risk of strokes, affects kidney function, and may result in irreversible organ damage if left untreated.
Advocating preventive healthcare, Dr. Sharma urged people to adopt healthier lifestyles to effectively combat hypertension. He advised maintaining a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while reducing salt and fatty food intake. Regular physical exercise, weight management, stress control, proper sleep, and avoiding smoking and alcohol were emphasized as essential measures for maintaining good cardiovascular health. He also educated patients about the importance of taking prescribed medicines regularly and cautioned against discontinuing treatment without medical advice, stating that negligence often leads to serious medical emergencies.
The camp concluded with an interactive session where participants received guidance on blood pressure management, heart disease prevention, and healthy living practices. Reiterating that hypertension is one of the most preventable and manageable diseases, Dr. Sharma encouraged people to undergo regular health check-ups and remain vigilant about their cardiovascular health.
