Leh: DD, Committed to raising the awareness for the safe future of the majestic Snow Leopard found in higher regions of Ladakh, the Fire and Fury Corps of Indian Army in collaboration with Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) and Ladakh UT came together on 23 October 2025 for celebrating the International Snow Leopard Day to generate awareness on safety and preservation of the elusive species. As part of the celebrations, Fire and Fury Corps organised an awareness programme at Rinchen Auditorium, Leh which was attended by Lieutenant General Hitesh Bhalla, UYSM, SC, SM, VSM, General Officer Commanding, 14 Corps and Mr S Rajesh, IFS, Chief Wild Life Conservator, UT Ladakh alongwith other Military and Civil dignitaries. The awareness programme was aimed at spreading a strong message for nurturing and preserving the snow leopard habitat.
With estimated 477 snow leopards calling Ladakh home, the region boasts the world’s highest density of these noble creatures, accounting for approximately 68% of India’s total snow leopard population. This milestone is a testament to Ladakh’s collaborative conservation efforts, combining local community engagement, scientific research and awareness initiatives. These endeavours have not only protected snow leopards but also promoted eco-tourism. Ladakh’s success story serves as a model for global conservation efforts, showcasing the power of community-led initiatives in protecting endangered species.
Lieutenant General Hitesh Bhalla, UYSM, SC, SM, VSM, General Officer Commanding, 14 Corps appreciated the efforts taken by all stakeholders in conservation of snow leopards in Ladakh UT and expressed full support of Fire and Fury Corps towards the endeavours undertaken for the noble cause.
S Rajesh, IFS, Chief Wild Life Conservator, UT Ladakh expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Indian Army for organising the awareness programme and reaching out the local population, further stating that such events will go a long way for securing safe and peaceful habitat for snow leopards in Ladakh region by generating the support of local population for the said cause.DD
