New Delhi: General Upendra Dwivedi, PVSM, AVSM, on Tuesday relinquished the appointment of the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) upon his superannuation, bringing to an end a distinguished military career spanning over four decades.
During his tenure as Army Chief, General Dwivedi focused on maintaining a high level of operational preparedness, advancing military modernisation, strengthening jointness among the three Services and promoting technology-driven transformation in the Indian Army.
Under his leadership, the Army maintained a strong operational posture along the Northern Borders under Operation Snow Leopard and effectively discharged its responsibilities on the Western Front. Operation Sindoor emerged as a defining moment of his tenure, showcasing the Army’s preparedness, precision and calibrated response to evolving security challenges.
General Dwivedi also steered the Army’s “Decade of Transformation” by driving reforms in force restructuring, technology absorption, modernisation, systems improvement and human resource management. Key initiatives, including Rudra Brigades, Bhairav Battalions, Ashni Drone Platoons, Shaktibaan Regiments, Divyastra Batteries, Electronic Warfare Brigades and Integrated Battle Groups, were advanced to build a modern and future-ready force.
He placed significant emphasis on enhancing coordination and integration among the Army, Navy and Air Force to strengthen joint operational capabilities in line with future theatre-based warfare requirements.The welfare of serving personnel, veterans, Veer Naris and their families remained a priority throughout his tenure. He introduced several welfare initiatives, including the Veterans Achievers Award, while reinforcing the Army’s commitment to its personnel beyond active service.
General Dwivedi also guided the formulation of the Strategic Security Guidelines @2047, aligned with the Viksit Bharat Vision @2047 and Armed Forces Vision @2047, providing a long-term roadmap for the Indian Army’s future preparedness.
For his exemplary service to the nation, General Upendra Dwivedi has been honoured with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM).
