‘Palestine witnesses highest number with 51 deaths’

Brussels: DD, The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has reported about the killing of 111 journalists in its annual report on journalist, and media profesionals killed in 2025.
The report has found that 46% of journalists have alone killed in Gaza (Palestine), highlighting the danger to the lives of the journalists, who report from the conflict ridden zone across the world.
The International Federation ofJournalist’s annual reports highlight a persistent and concerning trend regarding the safety and freedom of media professionals worldwide.
Deaths and Danger Zones: Over a multi-decade period, the IFJ has tracked a grim toll: Since 1990: A total of 3,156 deaths have been recorded since the launch of the IFJ’s annual Killed list. The report equates to anaverage of 91 deaths per year.
In the last ten years, there have been 859 documented deaths. 2024 Documentation: The IFJ documented 122 deaths, including 14 women. Worst Affected Regions: The Middle East and Arab World has been the most perilous region for the third consecutive year: 69 journalists were killed in the Region, accounting for 62% of all media professionals killed worldwide.
Shockingly, Palestine witnessed the highest number with 51 deaths. As per the annual report, otherhigh-risk countries include: Yemen – 13 deaths; Ukraine – 8 deaths; Sudan – 6 deaths; Philippines, Mexico, Peru, and Pakistan: 3 deaths each.
These figures underscore the high concentration of danger in conflict zones and emphasize the critical need to strengthen protection for media professionals and ensure justice for those who commit these crimes.Journalists in Jail: The Suppression of press freedom through imprisonment remains a global issue. Thelist released by the Federation says 533 journalists are in jails. In the 2024 documentation, 516journalists were recorded as imprisoned. As per The Federation, China stands out as the world’s biggest jailer, leading the global crackdown on press freedom.
The figures tabled by the Federation calls for strengthening of protections for journalists and to end the pervasive impunity that allows those who kill or jail media workers to go unpunished.DD
