Srinagar Police detain 6 for inciting sectarian unrest, warns public against similar

Srinagar, (DD): Six individuals have been detained and lodged at the Central Jail in Srinagar after being charged under sections 126 and 170 of the BNSS for inciting sectarian unrest through derogatory remarks.

The Srinagar Police took swift action following the suspects’ involvement in spreading content aimed at fueling division and disturbing public harmony.

In a press release, the police emphasized the gravity of such unlawful activities and issued a stern warning to the public. The authorities made it clear that any individual found engaging in similar acts, including the posting or sharing of sectarian content intended to disrupt peace, will face severe consequences.

The move comes as part of ongoing efforts by the police to maintain social harmony and prevent any efforts to disturb the region’s stability. The public has been urged to remain vigilant and report any such activities to the authorities.

Background:
The arrest follows a series of incidents in Srinagar where the spread of divisive sectarian content on social media and other platforms has raised concerns among local authorities. Over recent months, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a rise in efforts to disrupt communal peace, with several groups attempting to exploit sensitive issues for political or ideological gain. In response, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have ramped up their efforts to counter such provocations, focusing on curbing the spread of hate speech and content that could potentially incite violence.

Authorities have reiterated that maintaining public harmony is a top priority, and stern measures will be taken against anyone attempting to stoke sectarian or communal tensions in the Valley(DD)
