Srinagar, (DD) National Conference (NC) Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi met Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, the spiritual and political leader of the Hurriyat Conference, in Delhi today.
The two leaders, despite their contrasting political ideologies, engaged in a detailed discussion about the current political situation in Jammu and Kashmir, with a focus on the aftermath of Article 370 abrogation, restoration of statehood, and the release of political prisoners.
Sources close to the meeting revealed that their discussion also extended to the Wakf Amendment Bill, the plight of Muslims across the country, and the challenges faced by the youth in Jammu and Kashmir. They also deliberated on the controversial reservation policy in the region, a matter which has drawn attention in recent times. Mehdi, who had previously joined a protest against the policy, and Mirwaiz, known for his stance on the issue, both shared their perspectives on how it impacts the community.
Mirwaiz confirmed the meeting, stating that Mehdi’s visit was in his capacity as a religious leader rather than a political one. The meeting lasted over an hour, with both leaders exchanging views on the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir and broader issues concerning the Muslim community in India.
