Mehbooba Mufti criticizes NC for silence on crucial issues, Vows PDP will lead fight for J&K’s rights

TDD Correspondent

Srinagar, (TDD): Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti today accused the National Conference (NC) of failing to address key issues despite its strength in the Assembly and vowed that the PDP would take the lead in advocating for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, statehood, and the release of political prisoners.

Speaking at the PDP’s general council meeting in Srinagar, Mufti criticized NC’s silence on pressing concerns. “If 50 members of the National Conference cannot speak on statehood, special status, or the rights of political prisoners, the PDP will take up the responsibility and raise these issues for the people,” she said.

Her remarks highlighted her party’s commitment to tackling contentious issues such as the abrogation of Article 370 and the detention of political activists—issues that other political parties in the region have avoided.

Mufti emphasized the importance of releasing political detainees, many of whom were arrested following the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in August 2019. “These individuals represent the silenced voice of the people. Their release is crucial for rebuilding trust and creating an environment of peace,” she added.

The PDP chief also criticized the lack of political will among other parties in addressing the region’s unique challenges. She reaffirmed the PDP’s determination to fight for the reinstatement of Article 370, full statehood, and solutions to critical issues like unemployment, environmental degradation, and the drug crisis.

Concluding her address, Mehbooba Mufti said, “The PDP will not hesitate to take a stand where others choose silence. We remain committed to defending the rights, dignity, and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.” (TDD)
