Uri, April 23:(DD) The Indian Army today foiled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of North Kashmir’s Baramulla district, triggering a fierce gunfight as troops engaged a group of suspected militants attempting to sneak into Indian territory.
According to official sources, vigilant troops noticed suspicious movement of 2–3 unidentified militants in the general area of Sarjeevan, near the Uri Nala, during the early hours. The infiltrators were challenged by Indian soldiers, prompting a brief but intense exchange of gunfire. No casualties have been officially confirmed so far, and the operation remains ongoing with a heavy deployment of security forces cordoning off the area to prevent any escape.
Tensions Escalate Amid Fresh Infiltration Attempts
This latest infiltration bid comes barely 24 hours after a similar security incident in the same region. On Tuesday, April 22, suspicious movement was reported along the LoC in the Uri sector, leading to a heightened state of alert in the forward areas. While that attempt did not result in direct engagement, it had raised concerns about an uptick in cross-border activity ahead of the summer months—traditionally seen as a period when infiltration bids increase due to clearer terrain and weather conditions.
Security officials believe that the back-to-back incidents suggest a renewed push by terror outfits operating from launch pads across the border in Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Intelligence inputs have indicated heightened militant activity in areas opposite the Uri, Tangdhar, and Kupwara sectors.
A senior security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “There seems to be a coordinated effort to push infiltrators into the Valley before the snow fully melts in higher reaches. The army remains on high alert across the entire LoC.”
Strategic Significance of Uri
Uri, which has been a key infiltration route in the past, holds strategic importance due to its rugged terrain and proximity to major LoC flashpoints. The area has seen several high-profile encounters over the years, including the deadly 2016 Uri attack, which claimed the lives of 19 Indian soldiers and triggered retaliatory surgical strikes.
