Indian Railways on Fast Track: Growth, Modernisation and Self-Reliance in FY 2025–26

Indian Railways’ performance in FY 2025–26 reflects not just institutional efficiency but a broader story of economic resilience, technological advancement, and strategic transformation. With record freight loading, improved passenger services, rapid infrastructure expansion, and a strong push toward self-reliance, the railways continue to serve as a backbone of India’s growth story.

The achievement of 1,670 million tonnes of freight loading is particularly significant. It highlights the railways’ critical role in sustaining supply chains for essential commodities such as coal, cement, fertilisers, and food grains. In a global environment where logistics disruptions are increasingly common, this level of efficiency strengthens India’s economic stability and industrial productivity.

Equally noteworthy is the emphasis on indigenous manufacturing. The production of 1,674 locomotives and 6,677 LHB coaches underlines the success of the “Make in India” initiative. By reducing dependence on imports and boosting domestic industry, Indian Railways is contributing not only to technological self-reliance but also to job creation and skill development. This aligns closely with the vision of an “Atmanirbhar Bharat,” where critical infrastructure is built on indigenous capability.

Passenger services have also seen a qualitative transformation. The expansion of Vande Bharat trains, including the introduction of sleeper variants, marks a shift toward faster, more comfortable, and modern travel. These developments signal a changing mindset in public transport—one that prioritizes efficiency, convenience, and user experience.

Safety, long a concern in India’s rail network, is being addressed through technological innovation. The expansion of the indigenous Kavach Automatic Train Protection System over thousands of route kilometres is a major step toward reducing accidents and enhancing operational safety. Its continued rollout will be crucial in building public confidence and ensuring a secure travel environment.

Digital transformation is another pillar of progress. Initiatives like the RailOne app have streamlined services such as ticket booking, real-time information access, and grievance redressal. The removal of over 3 crore suspicious user accounts further demonstrates a commitment to transparency and fairness in service delivery.

Infrastructure development has kept pace with operational growth. The commissioning of Gati Shakti cargo terminals and the redevelopment of stations under the Amrit Bharat scheme are improving logistics efficiency and passenger amenities alike. Enhanced connectivity in strategic regions, including the Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir, also underscores the role of railways in national integration and regional development.

However, challenges remain. Maintaining service quality amid rising demand, ensuring uniform infrastructure development across regions, and achieving full coverage of safety systems will require sustained focus. The real test lies not just in achieving milestones but in institutionalizing these gains over the long term.

Overall, Indian Railways’ achievements in FY 2025–26 point toward a system that is evolving rapidly—becoming more modern, self-reliant, and citizen-centric. If this momentum is sustained, the railways will not only drive mobility but also play a decisive role in shaping India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation.
