Khaltse, Ladakh (India): The Inspection Team Khaltse on Friday conducted a special enforcement drive across the Khaltse market to ensure strict implementation of the ban on single-use plastics (SUP) and curb littering, collecting fines amounting to Rs 14,000 from violators.
The drive was carried out in compliance with the directions of the Union Territory Administration and under the instructions of Deputy Commissioner, Sham, Kunzes Angmo (JKAS).
The inspection team comprised Naib Tehsildar Khaltse Asgar Ali, Block Development Officer Dr. Zakir Hussain, Tehsil Supply Officer Afzal Khan, Sub-Inspector Skarma Angchuck, Assistant Sub-Inspector Mohd. Jaffer, Panchayat Inspector Tsering Angchuck and police personnel.
During the inspection, shops and commercial establishments were checked for compliance with the ban on single-use plastic items. Several traders were found using or stocking banned plastic products, and fines totalling Rs 12,000 were imposed under the relevant provisions.
The team also detected a shop operating without a valid licence during the drive. The Tehsil Supply Officer imposed an additional fine of Rs 2,000 under the applicable provisions of the Food Department regulations.
Altogether, Rs 14,000 was recovered from the defaulters during the enforcement campaign.
The inspection team appealed to shopkeepers and vendors to strictly adhere to the ban on single-use plastics, avoid littering and adopt eco-friendly alternatives to help maintain a clean and sustainable environment.
Officials also stated that similar enforcement drives will be conducted regularly, warning that strict action will continue against those violating the ban on single-use plastics or found littering public places.
