Reasi: DD, In a remarkable display of promptness, coordination, and humanitarian commitment, the Indian Army, in close coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Civil Administration, carried out a successful rescue operation to save six villagers who were stranded on a river island following a sudden and dangerous rise in the water level of the Chenab River.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of 20 April when six civilians from the villages of Pangali and Chak Malal had ventured across a dry channel of the Chenab River, in Area of Responsibility of Gigrial Battalion, to collect firewood from a river island.
While they were on the island, water was released upstream into the Chenab, causing a rapid and unexpected inundation of the channel.
Within a short span, the dry riverbed was submerged under 15 to 18 feet of fast-flowing water, effectively cutting off the return path for the villagers and placing their lives in imminent danger.
At approximately 05:15 PM, the Sarpanch of Pangali alerted the Gigriyal Battalion of the Indian Army about the critical situation.
Responding with utmost urgency, the battalion immediately swung into action.
In coordination with the Engineer Company of the Crosswords Division, a well-trained and equipped rescue team was mobilized without delay.
Demonstrating exceptional operational readiness and rapid response capability, the team reached the incident site by 05:30 PM. Upon arrival, the rescue team assessed the situation and launched the operation with meticulous coordination, ensuring the safety of the stranded individuals.
Braving the swift current and rising water levels, the rescue team employed all necessary safety measures and equipment to bring the civilians to safety. By approximately 06:10 PM, all six individuals had been successfully rescued, without any casualties or injuries.
This operation stands as a testament to the Indian Army’s steadfast dedication to the service of the nation and its people-not only in times of conflict but also in situations of natural calamities and humanitarian need.
