Srinagar, (DD)Minister Sakina Itoo on Monday emphasized the urgent need to crack down on major drug traffickers in Jammu and Kashmir, stating that targeting only low-level offenders is insufficient to curb the growing menace.
Addressing reporters in Srinagar, Itoo described the drug problem as a serious societal challenge threatening the future of the region’s youth. “We must save our next generation. Creating a drug-free Kashmir requires a united effort from all sections of society,” she said.
She pointed out that the responsibility to address the issue does not rest solely with the police or health departments. “Arresting those at the bottom of the chain is not enough. We need to go after the big fish who are running this network,” the minister asserted.
Itoo called for a collective approach involving government agencies, civil society, and religious leaders to effectively combat drug abuse. “Until we all shoulder this responsibility together, we will not succeed,” she added.
She further urged religious clerics and community elders to play a proactive role in raising awareness and guiding the youth away from addiction. “The government is committed, and the police are doing their part—but public cooperation is crucial to eradicate this threat from our society,” Itoo said.(DD)
