Cardiologist Dr Sushil Sharma Redefines Science of the Heart in the Age of Innovation


Jammu: Continuing the tradition of organising cardiac awareness and screening camps, the Head of the Department of Cardiology, GMCH Jammu, Dr Sushil Sharma, held a day-long cardiac awareness-cum-health check-up camp at Shiv Mandir Community Hall, Rani Bagh, Jammu.
The camp focused on screening individuals for heart disease and reducing the burden of cardiovascular illnesses.


While interacting with the people, Dr Sushil Sharma stated that cardiology, the branch of medicine devoted to the study and treatment of heart diseases, has long stood at the intersection of life-saving science and technological innovation. As cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of mortality worldwide, the urgency to transform how heart conditions are predicted, diagnosed, treated, and prevented has never been greater.

He said the future of cardiology is being reshaped by revolutionary advances that blend artificial intelligence, precision medicine, regenerative therapies, digital health, and minimally invasive technologies. These developments promise not only to extend life but also to enhance its quality, redefining heart care from reactive treatment to proactive, personalised prevention.

One of the most transformative forces in modern cardiology is artificial intelligence (AI). Machine learning algorithms are increasingly capable of analysing massive volumes of clinical data—electrocardiograms (ECGs), imaging scans, genetic profiles, and electronic health records—with speed and accuracy that surpass human capacity.

Dr Sharma elaborated that AI-driven tools can detect subtle patterns in ECGs that predict arrhythmias or heart failure years before symptoms appear. In cardiac imaging, AI enhances the precision of echocardiography, CT scans, and MRI by automating measurements and reducing diagnostic variability. Predictive models also help clinicians assess patient risk, personalise treatment strategies, and optimise clinical decision-making.

As AI continues to evolve, cardiologists will transition from data interpreters to strategic decision-makers supported by intelligent systems.

Dr Sharma further stressed that the future of cardiology lies in recognising that no two hearts are the same. Precision medicine, powered by advances in genomics and molecular biology, aims to tailor prevention and treatment strategies to an individual’s genetic makeup, lifestyle, and environment.

Researchers are developing bioengineered heart tissue, injectable stem cells, and growth factor therapies that stimulate the regeneration of cardiac muscle and blood vessels. While still under refinement, these approaches hold the promise of restoring heart function rather than merely slowing disease progression. In the future, cardiology may move beyond symptom control toward true myocardial regeneration.

Surgical innovation also continues to redefine how heart diseases are treated. Minimally invasive procedures, including catheter-based interventions, have already transformed the management of coronary artery disease, valvular disorders, and arrhythmias. The future will see further integration of robotics and advanced imaging to enhance precision and safety.

Highlighting future prospects of cardiac care, Dr Sharma said cardiology is entering a revolutionary era defined by intelligence, personalisation, and regeneration. From AI-powered diagnostics and genomic medicine to regenerative therapies and digital health ecosystems, the discipline is evolving beyond traditional boundaries.

“The heart, once treated as a mechanical pump prone to irreversible damage, is now understood as a dynamic, adaptable organ capable of repair, prediction, and prevention. These advances promise to transform cardiovascular care from crisis-driven intervention to continuous, compassionate, and customised health management,” he said.

As science and technology continue to converge, cardiology will not only save more lives but also enhance the longevity and vitality of human existence. Ultimately, the revolution in cardiology is not just about innovation; it is about redefining what it means to care for the human heart in the decades to come.
