Situation Turns Tense as Donald Trump Cancels All Meetings with Iranian Officials

Diplomat Foreign Desk

Washington: US President Donald Trump has cancelled all scheduled meetings with Iranian officials as tensions continue to rise between the two nations over ongoing “violent protests” and the subsequent crackdown in various parts of Iran.

The protests erupted more than a week ago against the rising prices of essential commodities and the devaluation of the Iranian currency. Although the Iranian government attempted to negotiate with protesters by offering various options, some protesters resorted to violence, prompting security agencies to launch a crackdown.

Iranian security agencies have claimed that the protests across the country were carried out with the active involvement of a “foreign intelligence agency.” Meanwhile, the United States has categorically warned Iran of consequences if it continues its crackdown against protesters.

As a result, Iran showed willingness to hold dialogue with the US to end the stalemate. However, these talks were suddenly cancelled by President Trump.

Taking to his social media account, the US President announced that he had cancelled all scheduled meetings with Iranian officials in response to the ongoing crackdown against protesters in the country.

Recalling recent developments, Iran has claimed that it has arrested several “agents” allegedly working for foreign intelligence agencies with the aim of creating unrest in the country and toppling the government.

The Iranian military has also expressed readiness to face any challenge amid speculation about possible action by the US or Israel. The situation remains highly tense.
