Srinagar, ( TDD) Nasir Aslam Wani, Advisor to Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, announced today that the Council of Ministers has formally submitted a proposal to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, seeking the reinstatement of December 5 as a public holiday to honor the anniversary of the late Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah.

This move comes after the holiday was canceled by the LG administration in recent years.

During his visit to the grave of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah at Hazratbal, Wani expressed optimism that the holiday will be restored by next year. “The proposal has already been sent to the LG’s office, and we are hopeful that the people of Jammu and Kashmir will once again observe this significant day,” he stated.

Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, the founder of the National Conference (NC), is remembered for his instrumental role in shaping the political history of Jammu and Kashmir. Wani emphasized the Sheikh’s crucial contributions in liberating the region from autocratic rule, shaping its political identity, and securing fundamental rights, such as the freedom of speech, for the people of J&K.

Wani paid tribute to Sheikh Abdullah, acknowledging his lasting legacy and transformative influence on the modern history of Jammu and Kashmir. Meanwhile, NC president Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who were also present at the mausoleum, did not speak to the media and left shortly after paying their respects. (TDD)
