INS Sudarshini Arrives in Antigua After Historic Atlantic Crossing

New Delhi: Indian Navy’s Sail Training Ship (STS) INS Sudarshini arrived in Antigua, after successfully completing a historic trans-Atlantic voyage under the ongoing Lokayan 26 expedition.

The ship was accorded a warm welcome by Vijay Tewani, Honorary Consul General of India to Antigua and Barbuda, and Brigadier Telbert Benjamin, Chief of Defence Staff of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF).

The voyage marks the first Atlantic crossing by INS Sudarshini, while the previous trans-Atlantic passage by an Indian Navy sail training vessel was undertaken by INS Tarangini in 2007. The journey from Mindelo, Cape Verde, to Antigua was the longest leg of the expedition, lasting 19 days.

Sailing continuously under sail, INS Sudarshini showcased traditional seamanship and maritime endurance during the voyage. The crew encountered challenging sea conditions, including heavy swells and strong winds, and successfully navigated them through sustained watchkeeping, coordinated sail handling, and traditional navigation practices.

During this phase of the expedition, INS Sudarshini also crossed the milestone of 10,000 nautical miles since departing from Kochi on January 20, 2026.

The Lokayan 26 expedition is aimed at promoting maritime outreach, strengthening international goodwill, and showcasing India’s rich seafaring heritage. The voyage reflects the Indian Navy’s continued commitment to maritime cooperation and the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” — “The World is One Family.”

After successful port calls across West Asia, the Mediterranean, Europe, and Africa, the ship has now entered the Caribbean and American phase of the expedition, which includes participation in the forthcoming SAIL 250 events in the United States.

During its stay in Antigua, the crew of INS Sudarshini will participate in professional interactions, cultural engagements, and community outreach programmes before sailing onward to Norfolk, USA.
