Those responsible must face exemplary punishment so that a clear and firm message goes out that law and order cannot be challenged and that acts of violence will not be tolerated under any circumstances. It is reassuring that leaders across the political spectrum have strongly condemned the attack. The concern expressed by opposition leaders and the seriousness shown by the government, including the discussion in the Rajya Sabha, reflect the strength and maturity of India’s democratic system. One of the most admirable features of the country’s democracy is that political differences are set aside when it comes to protecting peace, stability and public order.
