Srinagar: MLA Pulwama Waheed Para has moved a Calling Attention Notice in the J&K Legislative Assembly regarding the proposed Katra Gondola Ropeway and its potential impact on local traders, markets, businesses and livelihoods.
In the notice, Para drew the attention of the government to concerns being raised by local residents, traders and other stakeholders in Katra over the proposed ropeway and its likely implications for the town’s existing economic ecosystem.
Para said the people and traders of Katra have expressed apprehensions that the ropeway could significantly affect the traditional pilgrimage route and the businesses and workers whose livelihoods are linked to pilgrim movement through the existing route.
He also highlighted demands from sections of the local population for the pilgrimage to continue through the traditional road and established process.
In view of these concerns, Para urged the government to halt further progress on the project until comprehensive consultations are held with local residents, traders, transporters and other affected stakeholders.
He called for a detailed assessment of the project’s economic and social implications and urged the government to ensure that the interests and livelihoods of local people are adequately protected before taking any further decision.
